The European Commission’s Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) helpdesk is an initiative of the European Commission providing information on how to manage IP in order to promote innovation and competitiveness in Europe. The service is primarily targeted at researchers and European small and medium-sized enterprises participating in EU-funded collaborative research projects.
The IPR helpdesk has recently published a fact sheet focussing on intellectual property in the field of biotechnology. Biotechnology is a field where technology advances rapidly but returns on investments may be slow. IPRs facilitate protection of innovation within the field and can provide a basis for return on investment in research and development.
The fact sheet itself provides a comprehensive overview of the various forms of intellectual property relevant to the biotechnology field, specifically patents; the role of innovative biotechnology in Europe; and, how to use biotechnology patents for innovation indicators.
