I have just attended the FinDEVr 2017 conference in London, which is a meeting of developers broadly in the Fintech space.
A lot of the technology discussed involved APIs to enable better sharing of bank and other financial data. APIs or application program interfaces allow software components to interact and provide building blocks to make this easy for software developers.
The main talking point was PSD2 (the second European payment services Directive) and open banking. Legislation will require banks to be more open with their data (without compromising consumer privacy) and to also open up their APIs to allow third party developers to interface with banking systems. The panel of experts were unanimous in the view that this would be a game changer in retail banking. It will lead to a significant growth in technology in this area with currently unimaginable disruptive innovation ultimately benefitting consumers.
Some of the speakers already had patents and patent applications for their inventions reflecting the importance of a strong IP position to make the most of innovation in Fintech.
We look forward to seeing Fintech innovations in the coming months and years.
