World EV Day takes place on Saturday 9th September, providing the opportunity for businesses, policymakers and individuals to consider how they will drive change and support the shift to a decarbonised society.
However, as all innovators know, the journey is more than just one day.
Bringing an intellectual property perspective to this discussion, Reddie & Grose has conducted a comprehensive analysis of UK focussed patents and applications for ‘Technologies or Applications for Mitigation or Adaptation against Climate Change.’
Paul Loustalan, Partner and the team lead for our Future Transport group takes us through some of the key findings for the EV sector. Including, overall patent volumes, the most prolific patent filers and where R&D departments are focussing the bulk of their efforts.
“Patent applications fillings correspond with the UK’s status as a pioneer in the automotive industry. The proportion of worldwide filings made by British companies in this segment is more than double that made by British companies in all sectors.
Interestingly, internal combustion engine patent filings continue to account for over half of those related to powertrains indicating they’ll remain an important technology, whether that be with fossil fuels – or more hopefully – biofuels or hydrogen.
However, this is not the whole story. A significant proportion of R&D relates to electrical energy storage and charging for electric vehicles. This is clearly more complex when compared to the technology related to the fuel tanks required for ICE vehicles and therefore lends itself to innovation. This is an area where we can all drive positive change by encouraging more investment.
Jaguar Land Rover, Johnson Matthey PLC, Perkins Engines Co Ltd., Cummins Ltd and Arrival Ltd. together account for over half of the total number of patent filings suggested they’re all well placed to make a significant contribution.
By fostering collaboration and supporting such companies, the UK is poised to become a global leader in sustainable transport.”
