Alex Maxwell-Keys handles patent work in the engineering, materials and consumer products fields.
Alex joined Reddie & Grose in 2016 after graduating with a Master’s degree in Engineering Science. During his degree, Alex specialised in mechanical engineering, particularly fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
Alex qualified as a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney in 2021, and was awarded the Ballantyne Prize for the highest mark in the Infringement and Validity (FD4 / P6) UK qualifying examination. He is also a European Patent Litigator qualified to act before the Unified Patent Court.
A few years into his career, Alex gained valuable commercial experience on secondment to a patent department of a multinational company. During this secondment, Alex advised various business groups on infringement and validity issues, and on commercially focused filing and prosecution strategies. This experience gave Alex a better understanding of the commercial realities of innovative organisations and how IP can help a business achieve its objectives.
Currently, Alex works in the engineering, materials and consumer products fields, and has particular expertise in medical devices and powder metallurgy. His work includes drafting patent applications and prosecuting them at patent offices all over the world, as well as advising on infringement and validity issues. Alex also regularly represents clients in oppositions at the EPO and has an excellent success rate for both defensive and offensive oppositions. He also leads an annual, external training course relating to patent infringement and validity in the UK.
In his spare time, Alex is a keen poker player. He also enjoys rock-climbing and snowboarding from time to time.
