Dr. Michael Roberts practices in life sciences including biotechnology and plant protection.

Michael originally joined Reddie & Grose in 2001, and following a short period with a UK-based biotechnology and pharmaceuticals specialist firm, he returned in 2008 and was made a partner in 2010.

Michael’s IP practice is focused in the life sciences fields, and includes biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, genetic engineering, immunology (including vaccines), enzymology, pharmaceuticals, medical instruments and plant protection (including plant variety rights).

Before entering the patent profession, Michael gained extensive technical knowledge and experience through his doctoral research at the University of St Andrews into the molecular genetics of sulphate assimilation, followed by three years of postdoctoral research at the John Innes Centre, Norwich, in plant molecular biology and genomics.

Michael has acted for clients from around the world, including small and medium-sized companies, multinationals and universities. In addition to patent drafting and prosecution, he assists clients with due diligence and patent reports, notably for private or public fund raising, patent portfolio advice, and issues such as freedom to operate and patent validity.

Recently, Michael has contributed to The CIPA Guide to Patents Acts, 9th edition. This publication combines knowledge from 30 legal professionals, all individually selected for their proficient knowledge.

Away from the office, Michael enjoys motorcycling, walking, music, art, travelling, and being with his family.

Michael is one of the IAM Top 1000 patent attorneys 2021 and is in Who’s Who Legal’s list of Global Leaders in the field of patents for 2021.

Michael’s patent practice is focused in the life sciences fields. He drafts new patent applications for filing in the UK, Europe and/or US. He also has extensive experience in prosecuting patent applications directly in the UK and Europe, and co-ordinating patent filing and prosecution strategies around the world. Michael handles post-grant Opposition and Appeal proceedings at the EPO.

Michael provides patent validity and infringement opinions, and prepares due diligence patent reports for fund-raising or other purposes.

Michael is the main contact for plant variety and national listing work undertaken by Reddie & Grose. The plant variety work includes filing and prosecuting Community Plant Variety Right applications for international clients, and advising on post-grant issues and third party rights.
